Just in Case You've Forgotten

This is the time of year when we like to remind people that 'School Zone' speed cameras DO issue tickets in summer months while schools are closed, as well as on Holidays, M-Fr 6am-8pm.

As we have documented several times in the past, many if not most of the school zones that cameras in PG county and Baltimore city are in were created recently, solely for speed camera use.  And the majority of cameras in Montgomery County are not located in school zones, since they are 'grandfathered in' and exempt from the requirement that they be placed in school zones, and operate 24/7.  Freeway 'work zone' speed cameras are able to issue tickets 24/7 'regardless of whether workers are present'.  In some cases cameras are placed in reduced speed zones (including the new cameras going up on I-270 near Urbana) and the reduced speed limits ARE in effect when no workers are present.

So basically, just because they use the word school all the time to justify speed cameras, does not mean they are off when school is out.
